S/S 1998 Givenchy by Alexander McQueen silk runway dress from "Rhinestone Cowgirls" collection - S/M
exceptional dress from Alexander McQueen's short time at Givenchy in the late 1990s, taking over from Galliano, much to the chagrin of Hubert de Givenchy. the Spring 1998 ready-to-wear collection was named "Rhinestone Cowgirls" and leaned heavily into country western themes throughout, quite a departure, as you can imagine, for the classic French design house, and a perfect setting for McQueen to flex his creativity. this dress was featured not only on the runway but also in the May 1998 Vogue in the 'Garden Variety' editorial shot by Steven Meisel.
the dress has an exceptional cut, all cut on the bias, but also panelled to contour the body and create extra fullness in the skirt. the bright orange juxtaposes perfectly with the pink what look like chrysanthemums and in person the colours just glow. made of two layers of silk chiffon, the dress is mostly opaque - you can see on the runway the under layer was shortened at the hips to create the sheerness in the bottom portion. the dress has a zipper closure running the left side of the body and three delicate hook and eye closures over the left shoulder, a lovely delicate touch.
excellent vintage condition - no real flaws. dry-cleaned and ready to be worn.
made in France. 100% silk chiffon. marked 42, best fits 36-38 or US 4-6 maybe 8 depending on your desired effect. though the dress is cut on the bias, it is actually made of individual panels cut on the bias, giving that same ethereal feel but a little bit more structure in the cut. shown here fitting slightly too large but not clamped on a US 0 mannequin with 33" bust, 24" waist and 34.75" hips.
