beautiful dress from beloved designer Jean Paul Gaultier. forms part of LACMA's permanent collection and was also included in their book "Breaking the Mode: Contemporary Fashion from the Permanent Collection" published in 2007.

the dress is listed as Spring 2003 by the museum, and shares some key features with pieces from that season's runway, notably the bubble hem with the contrasting, visible lining. the dress has the "Classique label" and not the standard RTW label.

it is constructed of a somewhat stiff, somewhat iridescent, deep bronze satin that shines red in certain light. the simple neckline flows into an amazing, twisted design where the fabric wraps around the body before meeting the bubble hem at the bottom. this twist, paired with the stiffness of the red taffeta underneath, means that the fabric kind of sits weightless around the body, allowing you to manipulate it into different shapes that will hold their structure. the deep red lining then peeks through depending on how the hemline is sitting. a really interesting design that creates phenomenal shape around the wearer.

very good vintage condition other than the following flaws: one faint vertical scrape of sorts on the right in front measuring 0.5", and one larger scrape of sorts measuring 1.5" in the back paired with a catch. the flaw on the front is very faint and the one on the back, while larger, is also faint and gets lost in the folds, but they bear mention of course (see final slides). the dress is dry-cleaned and ready to be worn.

made in Italy. appears to be 51% acetate and 49% polyester. marked FR34 and US 4, but fits XXS/XS or US 0 as the dress has no zipper and is very constricting in the bust and upper back/rib cage. it would be very difficult to get on if too large in the bust. shown here on US 0 mannequin with 33" bust.

  • bust: 31" across plus some give in the way it's cut, maximum 33"
  • waist: open
  • hips: open
  • length: 38"
