exceptional necklace from the Fall 1992 Donna Karan runway show made by jeweller Robert Lee Morris. Morris was a self-taught artist who specialized in organic shapes and often used unconventional materials when coming up. he has collaborated and been in community with many artists and designers throughout his career, including Andy Warhol, Geoffrey Beene, Kansai Yamamoto, but had his most long-lasting partnership with Donna Karan, with whom he worked for two decades. he is the first and only jewelry designer to receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award from the CFDA, which he accepted in 2007.

this necklace was featured heavily on that season's runway. it's made of a large gold-plated cross with blue and red gripoix glass accents. it sits high, just off the neck, hanging off of a black silk adjustable satin choker. the gold is somehow both matte, with a brushed finish, and radiant, because of a special process that he uses, which he describes as follows: "High-karat gold is electroplated on brass, but over a soft nickel. Brass is first tumbled to get a matte finish, then plated in soft nickel, then gold on top of that. The gold is often 24k. Most (conventional jewelry) is plated over a hard nickel, which is too shiny for me".

roughly 3" wide by 3" high medallion. the total height of the medal piece, including the gold loop for the silk choker, is 4.5". the silk choker is 0.75" wide and adjustable in length.
