S/S 1993 Jean Paul Gaultier rare runway museum worthy short suit jumper with suspenders - XS/S/M
incredible piece from designer Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 1993 collection. the same set in the same print walked the runway, as did similar styles in other fabrics and lengths. the shorts and suspenders are also part of The Met's permanent collection, in black.
the set consists of a double breasted jacket, shorts that extend all the way over the bust and become a romper, a deep burgundy patent leather belt and suspenders made of elastic and the same patent leather as the belt. the jacket is double-breasted with slightly padded shoulders, no vent, and is semi-lined. the shorts/romper have pin-striped cotton lining at the waist and as the pocket lining and are pleated with cuffs at the bottom. the suspenders attach to the series of buttons along the band at top.
the set is in very good vintage condition. the jacket had two more buttons on the front, higher than the four that form the double-breasted closure, which are no longer present - the one on the left that is missing caused a small pull in the jacket where it was previously located (see final slide). the shorts have no flaws and neither do the suspenders. the belt is in excellent condition, though has a few vertical cracks in the leather (see before final slide). the set was dry-cleaned and is ready to be worn.
made in Italy. material tag removed - feels like rayon or wool/rayon blend. semi-lining of jacket feels like rayon and semi-lining of shorts/romper feels like cotton. jacket marked 44 and shorts/romper marked 42. best fits modern XS/S/M or US 0-2-4-6 - it can fit a variety of sizes due to the cut of the romper and the fact that you can cinch the belt at the top above the bust. shown on US 2 mannequin with 32" bust and 34" hip.
