classic Yves Saint Laurent dress from his Fall 1986 Rive Gauche collection. beautiful long lines, the dress has a square shoulder and slightly draped back, tailored into a very stream-lined waist, and finishing off in a long, slim cut skirt with slight kick flare at the bottom, as of the knee. the top portion has a little bit more volume than the bottom. the wide lapels, black satin, and long row of buttons give it a decidedly tuxedo feel, reminiscent of his famous Le Smoking suit designs. documented in this advance preview image for that season's collection.

very good vintage condition. there is no belt present, and it was clearly intended to be worn with one, as seen in the image, since there is no raised button at the waist. we think it looks lovely without, or else any wide belt in an evening finish could be used. the belt loops on each side of the waist have been sewn down flat. there is the slightest fading at the top of the shoulder, which does not show at all when worn (see last slide, which exaggerates the fading).

made in France. no material tag present, but most likely rayon/acetate blend. marked FR 40, fits modern US 2-4. cut very slim in the hips, where it will gape if too tight. shown on US 2 mannequin with 32" bust and 34" hips.
