Regular price

rare Jean Paul Gaultier set from the Fall 1988 collection. it is comprised of a vest/dicky that is open on both sides and simply lays across the bust and back, but only stays on by running a belt through the intended channels and attaching that same belt to the pants through the belt loops. these two pieces then become a full jumpsuit - quite an ingenious, and very sexy, design, from the ever creative Gaultier.

the pants are high-waisted, slightly cropped, with pleating through the hips, a crease, and narrowing to the ankle, creating a lovely line. the belt is covered in the same material as the top and bottom, with a leather backing. the pieces can be worn separately, though the top would require a belt at all times. note that the belt cannot be passed through the middle belt loop in the back when on, but this doesn't affect wear at all.

you can see two similar examples on that season's runways, and you can find a later example of just the vest/dicky in a knit in The Met's permanent collection.

the set is in very good vintage condition. the vest has no flaws. the pants have the slightest bit of visible wear, such as extremely tiny spots where the tan has rubbed away and revealed the black backing of the fabric. the main button on the pant was broken and has been replaced. there is slight wear to the belt, though no cracking. there is a spare button included for the vest. the set presents beautifully and is dry-cleaned and ready to be worn.

made in Italy. fabric tag removed, feels like wool blend, maybe with rayon. top marked 38, pants marked 40, fits modern XS or US 0-2. shown on US 2 mannequin with 32" bust and 34" hips.
